Student Support
Support
An important feature of the student support network at Queen's High School is that the staff involved are in a pastoral care role and not a disciplinary role. We aim to teach classes where the focus is on high quality teaching and learning.
Discipline matters are referred to the Assistant Principals, Deputy Principal and Principal.
The student support and pastoral care network aims to provide guidance and support for all students so that their time at school is happy and profitable. The Coordinators have the particular responsibility of keeping a watch on the welfare and progress of students at each year level. They meet regularly with Form Teachers at their year level and work closely with the school's specialist counselling and careers staff.
Our counselling team consists of a full-time counsellor, a co-ordinator at each year level, a counsellor for our Maori students and a co-ordinator for our international students.
Support is given in:
- Motivation and confidence building
- Personal problems
- Health and well-being
- Family issues
- Personal relationships
- Setting and attaining personal goals
- Developing skills and achieving qualifications
- Study organization and time management

Careers and Transition
We have a well-developed Transition and Careers network which includes the team of teachers who specialise in this area. These teachers liaise closely with the guidance staff, Co-ordinators and the Principal and senior administrators to provide the best advice and opportunities for the individual student.
In 2005 Queen's was one of the seventy-five schools selected to offer DESIGNING CAREERS, a program to support Year 10 students and their families in career education. In 2006 this was extended to Year 11 students. An important source of support may be found at www.kiwicareers.govt.nz/pathfinder

Learning and Career Plans
Learning and Career Plans (LCPs) have been developed for students to:
- consider the range of careers available
- help in assessing strengths and identifying the areas in which an individual can improve
- provide teachers with information about students who need extension programmes or extra support in a subject
- identify the reasons why a student may lack motivation and to work to solve these problems
- ensure students study appropriate subjects
The programmes, which are monitored by form teachers, also provide the Careers Team with useful information

Gateway Scheme
The Gateway scheme allows students to participate in the work place and to prepare students for their future vocation and employment. The aim is to ensure that a student has sufficient skills and training to enter the work force.
These programmes are developed to meet the specific needs of an indivual student and her parents are involved.
