Product Design/Hard Materials - Level 1

This Level 1 course builds on the skills and design thinking developed in Year 10, with a stronger focus on technical skills and design refinement. Students undertake two major projects, each following the design process. The first project centres on material exploration, where students investigate the properties, potential, and sustainability of various materials through hands-on experimentation. The second project focuses on developing a high-quality, fit-for-purpose product that is based on stakeholders’ needs.

Students continue to use a wide variety of materials, including wood, acrylic, leather, and recycled plastics, with an emphasis on sustainability. They advance their workshop skills by incorporating machinery such as a router. Throughout the course, students use written and visual communication to document their design process, apply stakeholder feedback, and evaluate their work. This course is ideal for students who enjoy creative problem-solving, hands-on making, and seeing their ideas come to life.

Product Design / Hard Materials - Level 2/3

In both the Level 2 and 3 courses, students undertake a single in-depth project over the year, developing their own conceptual design in response to a need or opportunity. Building on previous experience, they begin with a strong focus on idea generation, research, stakeholder consultation, and conceptual development in Term 1. From Term 2 onwards, students move into testing, trialling, and refining their designs, which leads to making a high-quality product.

There is an emphasis on independent project management, with students expected to plan and manage a safe and efficient workflow. They apply more complex construction methods, combining traditional skills with modern tools and equipment. Sustainability remains a core value, with students encouraged to make thoughtful, responsible material choices throughout the process.

The course fosters creative thinking, practical problem-solving, and precision in making, with a focus on producing outcomes that are both functional and well-crafted. It suits students who enjoy working independently, experimenting with ideas, and developing practical solutions through hands-on design and construction.
