Barbara has spent nearly five decades at the heart of New Zealand’s wool
industry — as a finewool classer, historian, author, and the photographer whose images have become part of the visual memory of our shearing and wool handling community.
Her camera has captured the rhythm, precision, and pride of wool handling
across Aotearoa, preserving moments that define our sport: the focus on the
board, the flow of the fleece, the quiet determination of competitors, and the
beauty of wool in motion. Her photographs have supported Shearing Sports New Zealand, the Allflex New Zealand Shearing & Wool handling Team, regional shows, and media across the country, helping tell the story of our athletes to the world.
But Barbara’s contribution goes far beyond the lens. As a respected wool classer and longserving judge, she has brought technical excellence and fairness to competitions nationwide. Through her work with the Otago Merino Association — including establishing a photography competition that shared New Zealand wool stories internationally — she has strengthened the connection between industry, sport, and heritage.
Her books and historical work have ensured that the people, families, and
traditions of our wool sector are recorded with care and accuracy. In recognition of her service, she received the Heather Perriam Memorial Award — a testament to her dedication to the Merino industry and the communities within it.
Barbara Newton’s legacy is one of knowledge, artistry, and unwavering
commitment. She has helped shape how our sport is seen, remembered, and
celebrated. Her work honours the past, enriches the present, and preserves the stories that will inspire the next generation of wool handlers and shearers.
