Fabric Technology is predominately practical based where students are taught aspects of design and problem solving and are encouraged to create their own unique projects to fit in with the given brief.

Year 9: Fabric Technology

Fabric Technology in Year 9 covers the following topics:

  • Machine skills, techniques and processes
  • Design process
  • Design and making a prototype article with applied design

The focus is on developing practical skills and confidence in planning and construction of article/garment for individuals.

Year 10: Fabric Technology

Topics: 

  • Design and construct a textile item
  • Techniques and processes
  • Recycling / Renovating

Skills: 

  • Planning, researching, designing, constructing fabric articles/garments.
  • Developing and learning techniques and processes. 
  • Making choices about methods and / or materials to meet a specific brief. 
  • Problem solving to develop a solution that meets the stakeholder’s environmental, cultural or ethical requirements.
Year 11: Fabric Technology

Topics: 

  • This course is based on the Year 11 Technology Curriculum and it aims to integrate the three strands – Technological Practice, Technological Knowledge and the Nature of Technology through units of work, developing the student’s technological literacy.

Skills: 

  • This course covers an introduction to fashion illustration, researching and design. 
  • Students will also learn basic construction skills, research design, pattern development and prototyping. 
  • Students will photograph their work for a magazine presentation at the end of the year. 
Year 12: Fabric Technology

Topics: 

  • This course is based on the Technology Curriculum.
  • It offers students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills and apply these to develop garments/articles.
  • Students are encouraged to work with a range of materials.

Skills: 

  • Building on skills already gained, students will learn advanced construction, pattern development and prototyping. 
  • They will research and design ideas with technology principles applied to make a specified product with special features. 
  • Students will photograph their work for a magazine presentation at the end of the year.
Year 13: Fabric Technology

Topics: 

  • This course offers students the opportunity to identify a personal or community issue to formulate a brief and use planning tools and specialised knowledge and skills to develop a product in materials technology. 
  • They will also research environmental issues in the fashion industry.

Skills: 

  • Students will work with a client to use advanced research and development, using prototyping and pattern drafting to produce a specified product.
  • Students will work on time management
